Reporting a new job offer, Medicare, Medicaid, or other coverage
Update eligibility for employer and government coverage before overlapping APTC becomes a full-repayment problem.
Report gaining or losing eligibility for employer or government coverage as soon as possible. APTC may need to change or Marketplace coverage may need to end for the affected person.
Report eligibility, not only enrollment
An affordable minimum-value employer offer can block PTC even when declined. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and TRICARE have program-specific eligibility dates. Provide the Marketplace with cost, effective date, and covered-person details.
End coverage with date control
Do not simply stop paying premiums or cancel the entire household when only one person gains other coverage. Use the Marketplace process and confirm the final Marketplace month for each enrollee.
Decision example and mistake
A spouse becomes Medicare-eligible while the rest of the family needs Marketplace coverage. Removing only the spouse may be correct. Leaving APTC on the spouse or terminating everyone are opposite mistakes.
Capture the terms of the new offer
When employment starts, ends, or changes benefits, obtain the offer date, waiting period, employee contribution by tier, minimum-value status, and coverage effective date. Report the change to the Marketplace rather than waiting for open enrollment. Eligibility for an affordable offer can affect PTC even when the employee declines it.
If affordability is uncertain, upload or retain the complete employer documentation and use the Marketplace's determination rather than omitting the offer or estimating its terms from memory later.
Filing and enrollment checks
- Test employee and family-member affordability separately.
- Preserve the employer coverage tool or equivalent notice.
- Stop unsupported APTC for the first blocking month.
