Report changes

Reporting marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, and dependent changes

Update tax household and enrollment facts promptly so APTC and coverage follow the people who will appear on the return.

Ruling
Household changes can alter family size, combined income, filing status, coverage eligibility, and benchmark premium. Update the Marketplace application promptly and verify the effective date.

Change both household and coverage facts

Add or remove the person, update expected tax dependency and income, identify who needs coverage, and report new employer or government coverage. A policy change without a household update may leave APTC based on stale facts.

Preserve notices for reconciliation

Save eligibility results, enrollment confirmations, termination dates, and all Forms 1095-A. Life changes often require monthly Form 8962 entries rather than the annual line.

Decision example and mistake

A family adds a newborn directly with the insurer but not the Marketplace. Coverage may change while financial assistance does not. The mistake is assuming the insurer, employer, and Marketplace automatically synchronize household information.

Update enrollment and tax-household facts together

Report marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, death, a dependent change, or a move promptly. Record the event date, expected federal tax claim, coverage effective date, and revised annual income. The Marketplace enrollment household and final PTC tax household can diverge, so preserve notices needed to explain the transition at filing.

Retain both pre-change and post-change notices so policy members, benchmark amounts, and APTC can be traced through the event month and reconciled to the final return.

Filing and enrollment checks

  • Confirm who will be included on the federal return.
  • Check the first and last coverage month for each person.
  • Review every revised Form 1095-A after the year closes.
