Marketplace PTC during an employer plan waiting period
Determine which months can qualify for Marketplace tax credits before new employer health benefits become available.
For 2026, a new employer's health-plan waiting period does not block PTC for months when benefits are not yet available. Once affordable, minimum-value employer coverage can provide benefits, the ordinary employer-offer rule applies.
Mark the first available benefit month
The controlling date is when the worker can receive benefits under the employer plan, not the hire date or the date enrollment paperwork is submitted. Before that month, the worker is not treated as eligible for the employer coverage. Marketplace PTC can apply during the gap if a qualified plan is in force and the remaining eligibility conditions are met.
Do not convert a missed election into a waiting period
If affordable, minimum-value employer coverage was available and the worker simply declined or missed enrollment, PTC is generally blocked for the related plan year. Keep the employer notice showing the actual waiting period, premium, minimum-value status, enrollment deadline, and coverage effective date. Report the offer before APTC continues into an employer-eligible month.
Coverage-calendar example and errors
A worker starts a job in February, cannot receive employer benefits before May 1, and holds Marketplace coverage for March and April. Those two months can remain PTC months; May must be retested using the new offer. Treating February as immediately covered creates a gap, while keeping APTC after May without testing affordability risks excess advance credit.
Document access to benefits by month
Ask the employer for the first date benefits can be received, not merely the eligibility or enrollment date. Use Marketplace coverage only for the intervening months and retest the offer when benefits become available. If the offer is affordable and provides minimum value, declining it is not an extension of the waiting period.
Check the first employer invoice or payroll deduction against the written offer; an unexpected effective date should trigger a Marketplace correction before filing.
Waiting-period evidence to keep
- Obtain the plan effective date in writing.
- Test affordability and minimum value for the first available month.
- End or resize APTC before employer eligibility overlaps.
