When Form 8962 requires monthly calculations

Use lines 12 through 23 when enrollment, benchmark, family, address, or APTC facts are not identical all year.

Ruling
Form 8962 annual line 11 is available only when the instructions' all-year conditions are met. Changes in plan, premium, benchmark, enrollment, family, address, or APTC generally require monthly entries.

Compare every Form 1095-A row

Check columns A, B, and C for January through December across all statements. Also identify allocation, marriage, birth, move, and coverage-start facts that can require month-level treatment even when annual totals appear simple.

Use zero and blank entries as instructed

A person can have no enrollment premium, no applicable benchmark, or no APTC for a month. Follow the form instructions rather than spreading annual totals evenly or carrying a prior month forward.

Decision example and mistake

A family moves in July and the benchmark changes while enrollment premium stays the same. Annual line 11 may not work. The mistake is looking only at column A and ignoring monthly changes in column B.

Use monthly calculation when facts vary

The annual calculation may be available when enrollment, family composition, and benchmark data remain consistent. Use monthly amounts when people join or leave coverage, policies change, benchmark values vary, or shared-policy allocations apply. A yearly total can conceal an ineligible month or assign premiums to the wrong tax household.

When either method is permitted, document why the selected method matches the year's enrollment facts and verify that annual totals reconcile.

Filing and enrollment checks

  • Compare covered people for all twelve months.
  • Identify changes in policy, SLCSP, or APTC.
  • Retain a monthly worksheet that totals to Form 8962.
