Form 8962 walkthrough: claim and reconcile the PTC
Connect tax family, household income, FPL, applicable percentage, Form 1095-A, net credit, and excess APTC.
Form 8962 first determines tax family and household income, then calculates the household contribution and monthly or annual PTC, compares it with APTC, and sends net PTC or excess APTC to the tax return.
Part I establishes the household calculation
Enter family size, household income, applicable FPL, and the resulting percentage. Use the instructions for the tax year being filed because percentages, poverty tables, and special rules change.
Part II compares premiums and contribution
Bring column A, B, and C data from Form 1095-A. Use annual line 11 only when its conditions are met; otherwise use monthly lines. Part III handles excess APTC, with no repayment cap for 2026.
Decision example and mistake
A household changes address and plan midyear but enters only annual totals. Monthly benchmarks differ, so line 11 may be unavailable. The mistake is using a prior-year form or instructions because the layout looks familiar.
Tie each part to source records
Build household income and FPL percentage first, then transfer monthly or annual Form 1095-A amounts, calculate the allowed PTC, and compare it with APTC. Complete allocation and alternative-calculation sections when the facts require them. The final refund or balance due is only the output; the supporting monthly records explain it.
Retain the household-income, FPL, monthly premium, allocation, and reconciliation workpapers together rather than keeping only the completed form.
