Moving to another state with a Marketplace tax credit
Coordinate old and new Marketplace plans, benchmark premiums, APTC, and Form 1095-A after an interstate move.
For a 2026 interstate move, a Marketplace plan cannot move with the household. End the old-state plan, submit a new application in the destination state, and reconcile each state's coverage with the benchmark for the applicable people and months.
Start a destination-state application
Report the move immediately and apply through the Marketplace serving the new state. Plan availability, premiums, and the applicable second-lowest-cost Silver plan depend on residence, ages, and coverage family. Paying the first premium completes the new enrollment; changing only the profile address does not transfer the old policy.
Rebuild the monthly tax record
Keep the termination notice from the former state, the new eligibility determination, premium invoices, and every Form 1095-A. On Form 8962, use the proper monthly enrollment premium, SLCSP, and APTC for each location. A stale address can make column B wrong, in which case the official Marketplace tax tool or state Marketplace must supply the applicable benchmark.
Move example and common errors
A household is covered in one state through June and in another beginning in July. The return uses the first state's policy amounts for the first six months and the second state's amounts for the last six. Continuing the former plan after the move, leaving both plans active, or using one state's benchmark for all twelve months can distort the final credit.
Close one state record and open the next
An interstate move creates two enrollment records rather than transferring one policy. Coordinate old-plan termination with the destination-state effective date, then retain each state's notices and tax statements. Form 8962 must follow the residence-specific enrollment and benchmark amounts for every month, including any month affected by an unreported address change.
After both Marketplaces issue tax forms, check for an unintended overlap or gap and resolve any incorrect residence-based benchmark before preparing Form 8962.
