Multiple Forms 1095-A: what to combine on Form 8962

Combine enrollment premiums and APTC correctly without double-counting the benchmark shown on multiple Forms 1095-A.

Ruling
Multiple Forms 1095-A do not always combine column by column. For a shared month, enrollment premiums and APTC are generally added, while the SLCSP treatment depends on whether policies cover one family in one state, different states, or people allocated to another tax family.

Identify why each statement exists

Separate policies, a midyear plan switch, changed family information, or coverage in different states can generate more than one Form 1095-A. Match each statement by policy number, covered people, and month before entering Form 8962. The combination rules here use the final 2025 instructions; reconcile 2026 coverage with the final 2026 instructions when issued.

Combine columns under different rules

For the same month, add column A enrollment premiums and column C APTC from the relevant forms. When one coverage family has separate policies in the same state, the Marketplace should report the same family SLCSP on each statement, so count column B only once. Different-state policies, marriage, and Part IV allocations require the specific Form 8962 instructions.

Two-policy example and mistakes

A parent and child hold separate policies in the same state for every month, producing two forms with the same household benchmark. The filer combines both enrollment premiums and both advance payments but uses the shared SLCSP once. Adding both column B figures would inflate PTC; ignoring one form would omit premiums and APTC that the IRS also received.

Reconcile policies before adding amounts

Build a month-by-month grid with one row per Form 1095-A policy. Add enrollment premiums and advance payments where instructed, but decide column B from the coverage-family and state rules rather than summing mechanically. Complete any shared-policy allocation first so only the amounts assigned to this return enter the grid.

If a corrected or late statement arrives, rebuild the monthly grid rather than patching only the annual total; one changed policy can alter several Form 8962 columns.

Multi-policy Form 8962 checklist

  • List every statement and policy number received.
  • Check whether simultaneous policies share one same-state benchmark.
  • Tie Form 8962 totals back to all included monthly rows.
